In other words, if one goes to Taiwan, “the sky – Taiwan is accessable!?” How can the sky be connected to the sea? When sailing on the ocean, you cannot see the end of sea no matter how far you look (even if you look so hard that you go blind)….. somewhere in Taiwan…. is farther than that?”   “Of course! ”

”You told me, I’ll take your place, so you went.” They took those people (rice growers) sightseeing. At the time, I had planted a field of rice, and also planted rice in a taro field at do makagat. Si Kazazang wrote it all down.

Yeah, that’s where I just left off. After coming back, he said, “Well, grandson, we should let your mother experience it. I feel bad for her. (The man interrupted: he said, “someone harvested rice.”) The grandson has already learned to crawl and stand up, and began taking steps and learning to walk. The grandson’s mother does not waste any time to get pregnant; perhaps she is going to get pregnant soon. If so, are you going to let her … (go to Taiwan during her pregnancy)? When I heard those words, I thought, “Wow, what happened to Dad? He is actually encouraging me to go?” “That’s good! I wanted to see the end of the sea anyway,” I said. “Is it possible that the sky and the sea are connected?” I thought. Because I thought this, I was criticized by others. ”You are looking for trouble.... how about your children? Luckily, you are the same as a typical woman (not pregnant), or how could you leave your children? In the past the old people also....We thought you were a good mother who would care for her children.”

“No, I am going to, uh, the house of an old man who cannot get out of bed and take care of himself.”…. an elderly man like him is lucky to have Han relatives. Otherwise, in a case like his, even though he is still alive, he would have already been abandoned in Yami society.  When others feed him, they have to hold him up and feed him spoonful by spoonful. He has four children, and each child is already a grandparent. He is already at the level of a great grandfather.

I can understand, but when I have to translate for others, I don’t want to translate. If I hear someone who cannot speak mandarin like me (speaking mandarin), they might reverse (the sentences) in their speech. They might say the ending of a sentence at the beginning or the beginning at the end, like speaking sentences in the reverse. Therefore….., it is very strange.

Even for a person like me who can not speak Mandarin, when I hear people say things like that, I feel very embarrassed. Even if others speak to you, if you don’t know how to speak, then don’t answer. Just tell them directly, “I cannot understand what you are saying,” and that’s that!

I’m already old, so what is the point of pretending to be Han (pretend to speak Mandarin very well). Even though I cannot speak their language, I feel rather embarrassed when I hear it. I cannot speak their language, so why do I feel embarrassed? When everything I say is reversed, how can I not feel embarrassed? Wouldn’t you younger people feel embarrassed? Even I feel embarrassed as an old person. Because of this, I do not talk to them (the Hans). That’s all.

“Sure, my child, may you have a long life. Even though you are the only child, you are like my right hand. Even though you pity me, you should not do my job as well.” “It was his fault for making me so angry.” Our former relative, who was living above, didn’t say “somebody’s mother”, but instead said, “somebody.”

Later, your late aunt and si apen Sidongen came. …. (It was very noisy). They call it mikociakocia, meaning disorderly and confused, because they think acting quickly is something to be proud of (is great). As for me, I harvested it very neatly. After I heard this, I carefully put it on the machine. After the husk touched it, I turned it. After all the husks of the rice fell off, I would check again to make sure, if they were gone, then I threw it away and picked up another bundle of rice to thresh. This is what work was like at the time. This is a response to what the child’s mother mentioned earlier.
