The second thing that I want to say is, when going out to work in the taro field, you need to go look at the water source first.

The reason to go to the source of the water (the irrigation system) is to see whether the source is leaking. If there are any leaks, then you must block them because otherwise little crabs will crawl into the holes and if there are holes, then the water will flow out through the holes. If this is the case, then there will not be enough water flowing into the taro fields that are farther.

After blocking the hole, the next thing is to walk along the irrigation system to see if there are any places that need to be flattened all the way to the taro field that you are going to work in. If you do this, then the water will be enough.

4.no maneveng rana ya am, tosia o  masen,

When you are getting ready to plant taro, you must not plant them too close together, or when they grow the fruit will be thin and small, like this (draws in the air). The space between the taro should be about twenty centimeters. In this way the taro that you plant will grow bigger.

5.ano kasa kawan rana, macita alilikey rana

After a year, if you find that the taro leaves are very small, then you might as well dig them all up and plant new taro.

That way, if a taro field has been used for planting for many years, then you should rest it, and dig the irrigation channels so that they do not flow into the field and the whole field dries up.

a manisibo,

The reason that you have to do all this is because you like it to become an abandoned field. This is what people in the past did, and is what is done by people who know how to farm.

8.am, o masengsenghaen am, “a alilikey  o  asi na am,

However, people who are afraid of extra work think, “Oh, why is it a problem if the taro grows very small,” so they will not rest the field.

9.ano maneveng ori  a kayan no akakat na am,

After planting the taro, if you find that the root area of mother ball has grown new shoots (new roots), then you need to cut them off, because this way the taro will grow very large. However, if you don’t cut off the new shoots, then the taro will become very packed, and the fruit will grow very small.

The withered leaves that you cut off should not be thrown in the field, but must be thrown to the side. When you are ready to wrap up in the field, then you would take care of it. This is what was done to work with the taro.

If you find that the field has clumps of dirt, then you should think, “Oh, this area is dried out,” and you should take the clods of dirt, dig them up and throw them to the side of the field because below the clods of dirt it is hollow. After you finish digging, the field should be very flat. This is the way to organize the taro field.

If you go into the mountains to work, it is ok to do just a little, but it is worth it when the grass only grows out every so often. This is the way that hardworking people, smart people do it.

However, stupid people will always say, “It is enough to have cut the grass. Why should I spend so much energy, if I do it so slowly? How long is it going to take for me to finish?” After saying this, they will just cut the grass quickly to get it over with. This is very meaningless.
