In the past, the elderly absolutely forbade the eating of dried flying fish after the ceremony marking the end of the eating of flying fish, because after the ceremony, all of the flying fish plates were put away. It is possible that they are not taken out at all because the smoke has coated them and therefore one must not take them out to use them randomly. Actually, they couldn’t catch that many in the past anyway because all they did was use fire to attract them and then catch them. Even the largest boats could only catch about two hundred fish, and after it was split between the crew, the most one person could get was about fifty fish, not even one hundred. The reason that we can catch a lot of fish now is because we use fishing nets to catch them. In the past, how could people use nets to catch the fish? Yeah, it was taboo, superstition, and where would the elderly in the past get fishing nets? They could only use fire to attract and catch the fish, so of course the quantity of fish was lower.

Therefore, they will not cook flying fish as soon as they want to eat it because each household does not necessarily have even one hundred strips of dried flying fish. Sometimes, one trip would only yield twenty fish, and split between thirteen ways meant that each person only got a little. This was the amount of fish in the past, so after the month of manoyotoyon, it was impossible for someone to still be eating flying fish, and plus, it was taboo anyway.

Of course, how could they catch so much in the past? Now, during flying fish season, we can catch many dolphin fish, but there would only be about thirty or fifty flying fish in the catch. If there was someone who was particularly good at catching fish, he probably could not catch even one hundred fish, maybe a maximum of forty fish. As for dolphin fish, one could probably catch about ten.

If we were really going to talk about not being able to finish after the ceremony that marked the end of the eating of flying fish it would probably be the dolphin fish, since larger fish, after they are dried, are tougher and harder to eat, so it is usually given to all the friends and family in the village.

Therefore flying fish is a type of fish with many restrictions, since beginning in the past until now, flying fish (season?) must not go past the month of apiavehan, and the ceremony marking the ending of the eating of flying fish was the last day that anyone was allowed to eat flying fish.

Mangatay is a ceremony done to break the taboo on eating flying fish after the ceremony to signify the end of eating flying fish. By using animal blood, one prays for blessing, good health and a long life after eating the dried fish.

Nipeyras is a new way of doing things. Here it talks about how after the flying fish ending ceremony during the traditional flying fish season one was not allowed to save any uneaten dried flying fish, as superstition had them throw it all away. However, modern people feel that throwing away dried flying fish is a shame, so they created the mangatay ceremony to break the former taboo, and therefore extend the time period that they are allowed to eat dried flying fish.

However, some elders from Jiratay feel that it is taboo to talk about throwing away dried flying fish.

This probably indicates the biggest catch each time a boat went out to sea, but after the season of the big boat (the beginning of flying fish season, about a month) after the dried flying fish is distributed amongst the ten members of the crew, each person only got fifty fish?
