What I want to mention about the old songs is that it will not hurt anybody’s feeling if we sing this song. They did not have steel rods or sickles to assist their work. This song describes the hard labor people experienced in the past. It has not been sung by only one person. That is certainly beside the point.

We thank this uncle very much. He has become the model senior citizen on the island. I hope more old folks can be like him, sharing the songs they know with us. Many young people would like to hear old people sing, but the old folks are not eager to participate in this type of competiton. But because some of them were willing to come out to sing, we are having a great time today.  Thank you very much. I wish you good health.

The singers interpretation of the song:

Isn’t it interesting that people on Orchid Island always sing? They sing when they fight, court, get upset, feel sick, or have no wives. This song says, “Imo a pineypasalan ko a tokad.” He talks directly to his cultivated field, asking it to do well by not growing so many weeds. I am alone without a wife to help me weed. So, I beg you, my field, not to grow weeds, OK? Although the field does not understand his speech, perhaps its space has an unexplainable magnetic field, which stops it from growing any weeds. Of course, I’m not positive about it. But the song simply reflects a bachelor’s feeling. He sings directly to his field. Maybe there are other meanings behind it.  For example, he wants to show off his many fields. The reason he has so many fields is because of his diligence.

The singer’s interpretation of the song:

剛才(唱的)真正的內容,就是,他們本來是一對戀人,後來那女的嫁人了, 那個男的不太甘心他的愛人嫁人了,然後他就趁她在挖芋頭的時候, 他就唱了這首歌, 可是那女生就說, 我已經嫁人了, 過去的戀情就誏他過去, 就這樣子, 雖然我們這個戀情已經吹了, 可是同樣有更好的人對待我;

The song I just sang talks about a couple, who used to love each other. The woman has married someone else, but the man is not happy to see his loved one marry someone else. One day, he sings this song to her, while she is digging taro. But that woman says I am already married. Let bygones be bygones. Although our love is over, I have another man who is treating me very well. It’s like a digging rod. There is a type of digging rod on Orchid Island, which is beautifully carved for ceremonial use. Suppose you were the beautiful ceremonial rod that I used to own. But if this rod has been cracked or broken, I can replace it with another beautifully carved one. In other words, I have another lover who is also treating me well. So I thank you very much. Please find yourself another lover.

Basically, the man did not succeed in winning her heart back. That woman did not use harsh words. She simply responded in singing, too. After they exchanged the song, they remained friends.
