Weeding in the Millet Fields

o ciri-círing ta  tao do pongso iya am, no ma-nokos ta so

kadai ya, o i-pánci ta do ciri-ciring ta  tao am, “tamo

mey ma-moongkoan na, ji manic-an ori a “tamo mey

man-zavok so kadai”, ji manic-an ori a itamo mey man-laik

so kadai” koan na,

According to the language of our island, if we plant millet, we, in the Yami language, call it “let us go mamoong,” and not “let us go manzavok” or “let us go manlaik.”

meycia-tare-tarek o ciri-ciring ta  ya ta, no m-angey do

a-hakaw-an am, ipanci ori a “man-laik”, no m-angey do

ka-wakay-an am, i-panci ori a “man-zavok”, no m-angey do

kadai am, i-panci ori a “ma-moongkoan ta,

There are often several ways to express the same thing in our language. Going to the taro fields (to weed) is called “manlaik,” going to the sweet potato fields (to weed) is called “manzavok,” and going to the millet fields (to weed) is called “mamoong.”

Explanation: manlaik means weeding the edges of the taro field; weeding in the taro field is called minamonamo. Weeding around the house is also called malaik. Weeding in a dry field is called manzavok, such as in a sweet potato, yam, or mountain taro field.
